They write “…all-over prints and patterns (that match!) are the new way to deck a room out in color. Paint is no longer enough says (Wendy) Labrum (Chicago)—the patterns in her project “added a bit of traditional whimsy in an impactful way.”  Kate McGregor writes: If there was a theme among the designers when asked about kitchen trends, it was color. Whether a bold hue, a fanciful drawer-pull, or a customized appliance cover, kitchens are embracing personality and abandoning the please-everyone neutrality.

Designers have not moved away from using a neutral color scheme to create a bedroom that serves as a tranquil retreat. LIGHTING

Designer Kara Childress says, “Architectural lighting in the form of sconces, chandeliers, and sculptural floor lamps will replace purely functional lighting. Using layers—like task, accent, and ambient lighting—brings dimension and warmth, letting rooms shift in mood throughout the day.”

Piero de Marchis, director at Detail Lighting says, “Homeowners are paying far more attention to the way spaces in the home make us feel, as well as their function. Our homes are having to work harder for us than ever before, with an increase in spaces having multiple functions. From open-plan living areas to kitchen-dining zones, the trend for installing multifunctional lighting that can be adapted to suit the room as it’s being used is set to continue to rise.”

Much like the layering of color, layered lighting will be a key focus in 2025. Add interest by incorporating a mix of table lamps, floor lamps, whimsical pieces, task lighting, and various silhouettes and materials, creating a unique atmosphere in any room. Get creative!

SPA-LIKE BATHROOMS

Whole-room wet zones, shower areas, reading nooks, saunas, and meditation alcoves offer a personal 'escape from the world' right in the comfort of your own home. Combine the layering of lighting, colors, and textures, then integrate aromatherapy to cultivate an environment that promotes relaxation and tranquility. Natural stone, textured tiles, and wooden accents can enhance the soothing ambiance.

Martha Stewart shares this about shower rooms, “Shower rooms are a type of shower with a glass door leading into a fully enclosed space. Houzz says the light and airy design is growing in popularity due to the privacy it creates. Shower rooms instantly transform your space into a spa-like one that allows for steam and sauna features as well as aromatherapy and chromotherapy.”  Chromotherapy (or color therapy) is a form of alternative medicine that uses color and light to treat certain health conditions.

There is a growing emphasis on wellness, both physically and mentally, and creating a space for that within one’s home. Designers are seeing an increase in requests for spas, gyms, water circuits, sauna steam rooms and cold plunges. They say their clients desire places that feel private and personal where they can unwind and relax.
