Let’s Get Ready to Barbeque!!
Wondering what makes the perfect backyard BBQ space? From the location, to the furniture, to the type of grill, to the recipes and more….here are some tips and suggestions to add a little ‘zing’ to this year’s BBQ season. Create the perfect look for your outdoor space by considering the following suggestions by Anna K Cottrell’s article from Realhomes.com:
1) Determine a Space for the BBQ
-The simplest solution to an outdoor BBQ might be using your patio. If you don’t have one, consider adding a patio area by using pavers that are made from concrete, brick, or stone. While these are great choices, porcelain, or clay tile, are options that give you the opportunity to be a little more creative with your patterned finishes.
-According to Artisan Exterior, safety should be your top priority in determining the location for a BBQ. Keep it away from your back door, and away from potentially flammable debris, low-lying trees, and hedges.
2) Don’t Forget the Shade
-If your BBQ area gets lots of sun, you’ll likely want to install some form of shade protection. The covering doesn’t need to be solid – opt for a slatted cover or a pergola. If a permanent structure will not work for your area, add a deck shade. Shade sails are cheap, easy to install, and come in a variety of fabrics, shapes, and sizes.
3) Keep BBQ Space in Mind
-If your area is on the ‘small side’, a large gas grill won’t work – think small charcoal grill or even a portable BBQ. Annie Collyer, Deputy Ecommerce Editor says this of her #1 pick, Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal BBQ, “The best portable BBQ I tested, it ticked all of my boxes and more. It’s perfect for families and couples alike, and it’s super convenient so can be used anywhere, from your garden to the beach or on a camping adventure. I store mine in my kitchen cupboard and think it’s great for cooking anything.”
4) Be Creative with Outdoor Furniture
-Today, a patio is more than just a patio – it’s another ‘living room’, with an open-air restaurant concept. When looking for furniture, find your own perfect style and add your personality to the space. You’ll want to keep weather in mind when choosing, as you may need to hurriedly find shelter for your furniture pieces in the event of a storm.
5) How About an Outdoor Fireplace
-An outdoor fireplace may be just the ‘ticket’ if you live in an area where the nights get cold. The warmth of the fire will allow you to stay outside longer and enjoy your BBQ meal. Consider incorporating the BBQ into the fireplace structure as a way to save space.
6) Narrow Back Yard – No Problem
-Simply make a few adjustments in the traditional BBQ layout. Rather than grouping furniture sets close together, position the furniture lengthwise, and flush against a garden wall or exterior. Select a rectangular table rather than a round table.
7) Add Budget-Friendly Additional Prep Room
-An inexpensive way to add more workspace is by setting up a folding table. Purchase a couple of baskets to toss in all those utensils, and you’re set to go.
8) Remember the Utensils
-Make sure to have these utensils on hand: outdoor cooking tongs, spatula, grill gloves, grill fork, firelighters, brush to clean the grill, your favorite seasonings, and a plate for the cooked food.
9) Cook the Perfect Burger
-Use high-grade beef chuck in an 80/20 mix (meat to fat).
-Spread the beef out flat and season as desired. Toss gently, yet don’t overmix. Right before grilling, season the outside of burgers again with salt and pepper.
-Form burger (don’t overwork) by lightly tossing 6-8 oz. meat from hand to hand, forming a ball. The patty should be as wide as your bun and 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Make a divot in the middle of the burger with your thumb to help it keep its shape while cooking.
-Leave the burgers in the fridge until ready to grill.
-Preheat the grill to medium or medium-high over direct heat. Oil the grate with canola or vegetable oil. When the oil begins to smoke, add the burgers.
-Put burgers on the grill (indentation-side up), season with salt and pepper, and let them be. The less touching, the better the burger. For a juicier burger, resist the urge to press down.
-If you’re making cheeseburgers, add the cheese during the last minute of cook time and cover the grill to melt it.
-Cook time depends on how you like your burgers. For 8-oz. burgers: Medium Rare = 7 minutes (135 degrees F); Medium = 8 minutes (145 degrees F); Well Done = 9 minutes (150 degrees F).
Now you’re all set to enjoy some outdoor food and fun this summer! Happy BBQing!
