2023 Home Interior Trends

What’s on the way out and what’s up and coming for home interior trends in 2023? Check out these ideas from some of the leading experts in the field of home design. With such diversity in options, there will certainly be something to appeal to everyone’s design sensibilities.

Music Rooms

A dedicated space or room for the sole purpose of creating, listening, or playing your favorite songs continues to gain in popularity. It has been said, “Sometimes music is the only thing that takes your mind off everything else.” Carve out a cozy corner in a room where you can ‘get away from it all’ or find a group of friends to make and perform your own music!

Color

It seems that just about anything goes as far as color is concerned. Linda Hayslett of LH.Designs says, “I’m starting to see plums and mustards pop up in more calming and deeper tones that seem as though they were a color found in nature. People are starting to embrace colors, but not in the bold, vibrant hues.” On the opposite side of the spectrum, Anne Hepfer, Author of MOOD says, “Overall, 2023 is going to be bold. Ultramarine blue will be the trending color for the upcoming year.” While Krisha Salud, Director of Interiors, StudioLA states, “The use of warmer wood tones and an earthy color palette in furniture and fabric will continue to rise.” And Sarah Cole, Sarah Cole Interiors feels that brown-based colors-caramels, tomato reds, terra cottas and deep corals are going to be big in 2023. It appears that all trends are moving away from bright whites and cool grays that have dominated the interior design scene for several years, even if these more cheerful hues just appear in accents around a room. Patti Carpenter of Carpenter + Company suggests that those who like things a bit more subtle, predicts a rise of pale shades of blue and green and a warm palette of calming corals, apricots, and russets. Be creative with color – try paining walls, ceiling, and trim in the same color.

Pattern

Interior Designer, Carrie Livingston says, “Stripes are going to come back in a big way. They’re the original high-contrast design element, whether used in wallpaper, textiles, or paint…”. Bold-toned plaids with lots of color are also coming into ‘view’. Plaids are great for throws, rugs, and pillows. Another creative idea is to mix patterns with your accent pieces (florals, plaids, stripes, polka-dots, etc.). Explore the concept of pattern by adding a ‘statement rug’ - think of it as a form of artwork for your floor.

Accent Pieces, Furniture, Window Treatments, Fixtures and Finishes

The words for 2023 are UNIQUE and SOPHISTICATED! Charlie Dumais, Ceramicist addresses statement lamps, “We predict seeing a lot more saturation of colors, more glossy than matte finishes and more elaborate lamp shades. Traditionally applied fabrics and patterns have become quite popular, so much so we are introducing shades in pleated linen as a standard offering. We also foresee ceramic shades, for table, floor and even pendant or surface mounts, becoming trendy.”

When thinking about nostalgic design, think less kitschy/more sophisticated. Master craftmanship is the key when incorporating heirlooms and thrifted finds into your spaces.

Expect to see more embellishments on window treatments, such as fringe trim, scalloped-edge shades, and shaped cornices.

High gloss finished cabinetry, mixed with matte wood finishes on open shelving or accent panels is starting to be seen. AND….it appears that gold finishes are likely to be sticking around for the foreseeable future.

Biophilic Design

Bring nature inside your home. The use of natural materials and elements of nature can add texture and serenity to any space. Consider adding items of wood, bamboo, sisal, cork, or moss, to name a few. Get creative and find ways to allow the lushness of nature find its way into your living space. There are even fabrics being developed from orange skins and rose stems. Many artisans are using botanicals to dye their fabrics, which brings a richness and uniqueness to each piece.

Arches and Craftsmanship

Lynn Stone, Hunter Carson Design is one of several designers who see the trend  of arches making its way into homes in 2023. “Rounded door frames, thresholds and ceilings are going to be big in 2023. Arches evoke an old-world architectural era of timelessness and softness to any space.”

Roberto Ramos, CEO of The Ideatlier believes, “[There’s an] emphasis on ornate décor, the reverence of wood, and specialized touches including inlay and hand-hewn details.”

Floor Plans

While there were some designers who are seeing a return to separate living spaces (especially a separate kitchen), the open floor plan seems to still have the preferential edge. “Open floor plans have become somewhat controversial in the past year. While many designers have declared open floor plans over,” says Interior Designer, Shay Holland, she doesn’t think this trend is truly going way any time soon. “Open spaces allow us to do life together. And while modern home/work living often demands privacy, most of us don’t want to be isolated in a room all day.”

All-in-all, a person wants a home to tell their own, unique story. And with all these choices, you’re sure to find the way to tell your story.
